Christmas Lights Switch On Events In & Around Guildford

Guildford hasn't held its big evening Christmas lights switch-on since 2019, and there isn't one listed for 2026. The council stopped it over crowd safety, after 7,000-odd people squeezed into the High Street. Instead the season kicks off with the free Festive Family Fun Day on Sunday 15 November 2026, 11am to 4pm. Think choirs, a parade, a giant snow globe and mulled wine, all in daylight, which frankly suits small people and their bedtimes rather better. Want proper twinkly lights after dark? Illuminate at Guildford Castle opens the day before, and Farnham and Godalming both do a classic switch-on.

Quick picks for 2026

  • Best free day out: Guildford Festive Family Fun Day, Sunday 15 November, 11am to 4pm.

  • Best for actual lights: Illuminate Guildford Castle, from Saturday 14 November (book ahead, no walk-ins).

  • Best old-school switch-on nearby: Godalming, Sunday 22 November, lights on at 5pm at the Pepperpot.
